Closed Captioning Series

I've always been fascinated with the power of storytelling through photos.

But lately my fascination has been leaning towards the clash between generic photos and closed captioning. Now I know I'm not the first blogger to put captions in seemingly ordinary photos, but I think I finally understand why artists do it in the first place. After all, I believe it was Gucci that used captions in their Fall Fashion campaigns last year.

There's a certain generic tone that each photo embodies while capturing a relatable state of mind. Teenage angst and the general fascination with love and heartbreak seem to be the most common themes.

For example, the fourth photo down was taken in a dingy bar bathroom at around 1:35am. Personally, I don't really consider myself a bar-person... but I am, if I do say so myself, a reliable wing-woman during such circumstances. After receiving a bunch of semi-creepy vibes by strange men and watching drunken college-kids try to flirt with each other, I found myself sitting in the corner of the bar like an outsider watching a movie. In that exact moment, I felt more like Lorde or Alessia Cara displaced in what would seem like a normal social situation.

Note: Just by my looks with the chocker and dark lipstick, the connection to Lorde couldn't be more perfect.

I hope you too can find art in the most uncanny of places.

xx Ella Kol
