Home is where the heart is
Welcome to the Sakamoto Family Home.
My childhood was exceptional in many ways. It was not until I moved away from home for college that I developed a newfound appreciation for the home I grew up in. Built in the early 2000s, my parents designed one of the few modern homes at the time in Southern Redondo Beach. The architect, Pat Killen, built my parent’s dream home with a focus on my father’s minimalist sensibilities and Japanese culture. The entirety of the home is open with lots of natural light and exposed surfaces. Vintage antiques, perfume bottles, and teapots can be found throughout the living spaces while paper Ikea lamps bring a contemporary warmth into the home. The centerpiece of our sitting room is of course a Le Corbusier LC4 chaise lounge which my twin brother and I used to slide up and down on when we were little. Though I was surrounded by contemporary and modern design all my life, I never really grew to appreciate it until recently. Like many families trying to make it through the recession, my family never completely recovered, so as it got harder and harder to maintain the beautiful home I grew up in, the more I developed an appreciation for the home my parents envisioned.
I am currently inspired by American interior designer, Kelly Wearstler. Her iconic interiors can be found throughout the collection of Proper Hotels in Santa Monica, San Francisco, and Hollywood. Her magical mix of contemporary pieces with rich color palettes make every space feel open yet divinely cozy. I noticed a string of girls on Instagram posting chic outfit photos at Santa Monica Proper, so her spaces are officially Instagram approved as well.
