Resilience in May

Resilience in May

Resilience

ri-ˈzil-yən(t)s

an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change

“April showers bring May flowers.”

After the simmer of bday festivities in quarantine have burnt out, I started off the month of May facing a deeper reality: The virus is not going to go away anytime soon. So far, the virus has taken away my job, my bday, my friends, and even sometimes, my creative spirit. Inspiration can be hard to find when each day starts to feel like a blur and daily life suddenly feels a bit dim. Time feels like it’s at a standstill and no one knows when it’s going to come to an end.

Naturally, there are good days and there are bad days. Some days I just don’t feel interested in anything while others I find myself trying to start three new hobbies at once. My friends have been integral to helping me feel less alone during this dark time. From movie nights to long chats on the phone, in some ways my friends feel closer than ever. Conversations can be hours long and it’s always time well spent.

On one particular day when I was feeling a bit out of sorts, I walked down to a local park. On one side of the park, a whole field of purple flowers were in bloom. These particular flowers tend to hit their peak bloom around my birthday. I have no idea what they are called but as a young girl, my mom would bring my brother and I to a neighboring park to take our Easter photos in a hillside covered in these purple flowers. I recall being afraid to sit anywhere on the hillside because bees would be busy buzzing from flower to flower. The things my mother and I will do for photos…and yet I still haven’t been stung by a single bee.

Though times are so uncertain and scary now, there is hope. I chose the word resilience to describe the month of May because there is great strength in being able to adapt to the changing world. There’s no doubt the virus has wreaked havoc on our world and families but we will persevere. There is still so much good in the world, so much love. I hope, wherever you are, you too can find hope.
