Ever since I was old enough to put on my own shoes and pick out my own outfits, I dreamed about being a model. Every month a new issue of Instyle, Bazzar, or W magazine came in the mail, my mom and I would prop ourselves up on the kitchen barstools and pick out our favorite pieces on each page. It was a bonding experience for us and it was a chance to dream.
As I started to get older, I realized the odds were stacked against me to actually become a model. It's just one of those occupations that overlooks internal beauty and pinpoints external features. Some would argue that our obsession with appearance is unhealthy and flawed, but I believe that appearance does matter. To a certain extent, appearance is a matter of self expression. It's an opportunity to express your individualism. After all, an outfit is worth a thousand words.
Now, no one has to tell me twice that looks are not everything, but consider this: In the time it takes you to look at someone, do you or do you not already have a preconceived notion on who that person is? Judgment is part of being human. It's how we go from there that defines who we are on the inside.
