Underwood Farms Pt. 2

Underwood Farms Pt. 2

My second trip to Underwood Farms was filled with a new assortment of fresh vegetables and fruits. Since I’ve last been to the farm, a lot has changed. Now, the farm has opened up its Animal Center that includes baby ducks, Scottish Highland cattle, piglets, emus, sheep, horses, goats, alpacas, and more. If I had more time to spend at the farm, I definitely would have waited in line to hold the baby ducks.

On the day that I went to pick my own produce, it was very windy and warm. Heat is one thing, but wind on an open field is a bit harder to navigate because the dust can pick up and fly everywhere. Nevertheless, I managed to pick an assortment of veggies. Since I arrived late in the afternoon, I was told that strawberry picking was closed for the day and that there weren’t any good berries left to pick. As it turned out, there were fresh picked strawberries at the fruit stand to purchase and let me tell you, they were the BEST strawberries I’ve ever had in my life: juicy, plump, and super fresh.

Below are some photos that I took during my trip to Underwood Farms.

In the end, the fruits and veggies that I brought back from the farm included:

  • Fresh Picked:

    • Carrots

    • Reddish

    • Beets

    • Cauliflower

    • Snap Peas

    • Broccolini

  • From the market:

    • Strawberries

    • Ginger

    • Red Potatoes

    • Baby tomatoes

    • Squash

    • Cucumber

    • Zucchini

    • Mini Bell Peppers

    • Scallions

With my fresh produce, I used some of the veggies to decorate a batch of focaccia bread. Also, I wanted to experiment with some of the produce to create some natural dyes.

Overall, it was yet another successful visit to the farm. I love the simple magic that farm life provides. It really is exciting to see fresh produce bursting from the soil. As a result, picking my own veggies gives me a greater appreciation for all that goes into putting food on the table.

Read about my first harvest at Underwood Farms here. I can’t wait to go back for raspberry picking season!
